Elizabeth Shaw-Draves maintains a general practice offering individual, couples, and family therapy. She works with clients on a variety of issues, including self esteem, women’s issues, life transitions, peri- and postnatal mothering and mood disorders, adolescent transitions, communication issues, relationship issues, depressive and anxious disorders, and gay and lesbian issues. Elizabeth is a psychodynamically trained therapist with an integrative approach to counseling, utilizing guided imagery, creative visualization, and journaling, alongside cognitive behavioral therapy and more traditional therapeutic techniques, to design an individual and unique plan for each client.
Elizabeth encourages client-centered counseling with the aims of increased self actualization, the attainment of higher needs, and the empowerment of the client to assist him or herself. She encourages each client to view his or her emotional development, psychological well-being, and relationship dynamics as part of a larger picture that integrates mind, body, and soul. Her goal is to provide the client with a safe, non-judgmental space within which to heal and grow.
Elizabeth received her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Detroit Mercy, and has been in practice for over 5 years. Elizabeth did her M.A. internship at Neighborhood Services Organization (NSO), where she worked with mentally ill older adults at or below the poverty line. She continued to work for NSO after graduation, providing psychological testing, assessment, and therapeutic services to adults with developmental disabilities. In 2006, Elizabeth accepted a position at Blue Water Counseling, where she worked with individuals, children, and families on a variety of issues. Beth is affiliated with the Michigan Association of Professional Psychologists (MAPP), and the Michigan Psychological Association (MPA).
