Ann Smith, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist in the states of Michigan and Arizona. Her experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings has prepared her to sit with a wide range of clients. She specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, weight management, bariatric surgery, pregnancy and postpartum disorders, relational issues, mood disorders, and difficulties common to adolescents. Dr. Smith believes that physical and mental health is inextricably intertwined.  To impact one is to impact the other. Therefore, she considers a holistic approach to care necessary, respecting each individual as a whole person.  She works to provide a safe, respectful and accepting atmosphere for self-exploration.  Therapy is collaborative between therapist and client, joining together to understand the sources of pain, fear, and unhappiness, and to make changes that will create a more joyful and fulfilling life. While “symptom relief” is a priority early in treatment, Dr. Smith attempts to get to know the person well enough to guide them into insights regarding the causes of their problems. She will be active in sessions and help clients identify their strengths, so they may use these positive attributes to overcome difficulties, thereby creating lasting change that will shift life toward joy and fulfillment.

Dr. Smith started treating patients with eating disorders and obesity in 2000 while training at The University of Chicago Eating Disorder Clinic.  She completed a predoctoral internship at Austin State Hospital and her postdoctoral training at a bariatric surgery center in Arizona. In addition to active participation in The Academy for Eating Disorders, consultation groups, and conferences focused on eating disorders, Dr. Smith has taught seminars on these topics at Universities and a hospital residency program. She is also a member of Postpartum Support International and the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services and she has pursued advanced study and supervision related to pregnancy and postpartum issues, birth trauma and infertility. Dr. Smith feels passionate about helping women and families through the joys and trials of pregnancy, birth and parenting.  She is involved in other professional organizations including the American Psychological Association, The Michigan Psychological Association and The Michigan Society for Integrative Psychoanalytic Studies.
